When I first started searching for a Japanese girl hand dyed fabric dyeing technique that could produce any color, I couldn’t find anything that was easy to work with. As a Japanese fashion industry veteran who has been making clothes since the 1980’s, I’ve made patchwork for over three decades. I found nothing that was easy and I wanted the products to be of high quality to meet the demands of my customers. So I had to find something that I could make in my shop with less effort and less time spent.
I thought that the best way to do this was to turn my method of cotton canvas patchwork into a dye free process. I knew that I could create hundreds of patches using patchwork cotton, and I also knew that I could apply dye to these patches to achieve the desired color. The problem with dyeing cotton is that you have to apply a lot of the dye, and the patch can warp if the dye runs into the warp. This is where a patchwork cotton garment has the advantage. In order to get a good dye job, you would only need a small amount of dye, and the use of a fiberboard bottom rather than a plastic one is beneficial as it can be easily removed for cleaning.
A lot of people are getting interested in patchwork because of its ability to create custom clothing. Having only one or two designs on a project can save a lot of money in the long run. You could even use a blanket as the pattern to create an entire outfit. I used to hand dye fabrics on a small scale and used a small single machine with multiple colors to create the entire project. In fact, some of my customers may still use a smaller machine but with more than two colors. As for the dyeing process, I eventually discovered the cotton patchwork technique and now I make dye free clothing using just one machine.
